Sanchin - "Three Battles"

  • Sanchin kata is a 'pigeon-toed' stance which enables the karateka to be stable and endure all types of blows. 
  • The body of a karateka in this stance is in constant tension or the muscles are contracted at all times. 





Heiko Dachi 
Yoi, Rae, Heiko Dachi 
  1. Step forward (migi / right) into Sanchin dachi, simultaneously raise both hands slightly below shoulder level,     elbows locked into a Nihon Uchi Uke palms facing you, breathe in and hold breath, while releasing     your breath, release only through your mouth.
  2. Now in a swift motion, move your (left / hidari) arm to a chamber position and breathe in through your nose.
  3. Release your (left / hidari ) arm from chamber position, with a (left / hidari) arm Gyaku Tsuki and breathe out through  the mouth.
  4. In a swift move, return your (left / hidari) arm to the  Nihon Uchi Uke position and deeply breathe in through your nose and hold this position.
  5. Step forward  (left / hidari)  foot to the Sanchin dachi position and breathe in and hold your breath.
  6. Now in a swift motion, move your (migi / right) arm to a chamber position and breathe in through your nose.
  7. Release your (migi / right) arm from chamber position, with a (migi / right) arm Gyaku Tsuki and breathe out through the mouth.
  8. Step forward (migi / right) into Sanchin dachi, now in a swift motion, move your (left / hedri) arm to a chamber position and breathe in through your nose.
  9. Release your (left / hidari)  arm from chamber position, with a (left / hedri) arm Gyaku Tsuki and breathe out through the mouth.
  10. In a swift move, return your (left / hidari) arm to the Nihon Uchi Uke position and deeply breathe in through your  nose and hold this position.
  11. now in a swift motion, move your (left / hidari) arm to a chamber position and breathe in through your nose.
  12. Release from chamber and fist goes to under the elbow of the (migi / right) arm.
  13. Now (migi / right) foot steps over the (left / hidari) with a mawatte, once turn is completed your (left / hidari) do a (left / hidari) Uchi Uke the (right / migi) will be in chamber.
  14. Release your (migi / right) arm from chamber position, with a (migi / right) arm  Gyaku Tsuki and breathe out through the mouth.
  15. In a swift move, return your  (migi / right) arm to the Nihon Uchi Uke position and deeply breathe in through your nose and hold this position.
  16. Now you will repeat steps 1 -15 again.
  17. Now move forward only once in Sanchin dachi and complete the 3 sets of hand movements again, on the    last return to the  Nihon shuto Uchi Uke position, breath in and hold.
  18. Now bring hands together chest level and are turned down, and a slight push outward, while breathing out.
  19.  (1) Now chamber both fists and breath in, now bring hands together chest level and are turned down, and a slight push outward, while breathing out.
  20.  (2) Now chamber both fists and breath in, now bring hands together chest level and are turned down, and a slight push outward, while breathing out.
  21.  (3) Now chamber both fists and breath in, now bring hands together chest level and are turned down, and a slight push outward, while breathing out.
  22. Step back with (right / migi) foot into Sanchin dachi, while doing a Mawashi Uke, breath out.
  23. Step back into Musubi Dachi.
  24. Rae and hold your breath and return to the initial Heiko Dachi position.
